Commagene

During the Hellenicthsand Roman

periods in the area between the

eastern and the Commagene Kingdom .

Although the kingdom was small it controlled

thepasses of the Taurus range of mountains

and possessed the fertile cultivated

area irrigated by the Euphretes.

The Commagene kingdom which

was descbribed as tart of Northem

Syria in antique geooraphy was bordered

by the Euphrates to the East Cilicia to the

West and Capadocia to the North .

These lands most of wihch are in the

Adıyaman province today are surrounded

by Kahramanmaraş,Malatya,Gaziantep,

Diyarbakır and Urfa.This territory which is

also called upper Mesopotmia has been inhabited by man since the Paleolitch age.
